Depression Era Cooking With Clara
I happened upon this video of a 91 year old lady making a "poor man’s meal" from depression days. I thought that it was insightful and interesting. She makes that statement that potatoes were "..a dollar a sack. That was a lot of money." What do you think?

Goodbye Fr. Richard John Neuhaus
A friend of mine has died. I had never met Fr. Neuhaus but knew him through his various works of which First Things magazine was perhaps the best known. Fr. Neuhaus was a prominent Catholic and a man of immense intellect. He was a force of reason in an often unreasonable society. He will be [...]
Eco-terrorism and Emotion
Liberals (particularly those of the fanatical variety) often see themselves exempt from rules and the law as long as they feel that they are doing the right thing. It’s the kind of attitude that permits someone like Obama or Clinton or any of a thousand Democratic politicians to spew things like "Bush lied, people died" [...]
Catholic Joke
The priest recently told this joke: Joe was a new Catholic going to his first confession. He began, "Bless me Father for I have sinned. I have been stealing lumber from my employer." The priest asked, "How much lumber." Joe continued, "Enough to build my house and a house for my brother." The priest then [...]

The idea generally is that in order to bypass the large multinational corporations which screw Juan Valdez out of a fair wage, the public consciousness can be persuaded to "buy [...]
Obvious Even To A Child
Always be suspicious of "scientific" reports that don’t seem to fit with common sense. Often what is obvious to the common folk perplexes the enlightened elites. And regarding art, if you think it looks like crap, it is. What do these things have to do with each other? Well remember all the fuss about how [...]
Military Virtue
As is my habit (and often to the dismay of my staff), I like to engage people that I meet in conversation and in particular, I enjoy hearing stories of their lives. I like to hear of their triumphs and their hard times. They always teach me something about life in general and usually something [...]
What Every Pope Needs
I thought this was a rather interesting gift to Pope Benedict. Seems that the Fiat Company has presented Benedict with a tractor painted with the papal coat of arms and ready to go. “It’ll tow and position the enormous, 17-ton mobile platform on which the Pope will hold his weekly Wednesday General Audience in St [...]
