Hold Your Nose and Vote Rudy?

With the presidential primaries rapidly approaching, there is greater concern on the part of some Christians with the prospects of Rudy Giuliani as the Republican Party candidate.  There is no doubt that Rudy is less than orthodox as a Catholic (although he would make an average Protestant in my view) and has brought upon himself the (deserved) scorn of any number of Evangelical and faithful Catholics for his stand on homosexuality, gay “marriage,” any number of social issues including, of course, abortion.

The primaries will decide who will be the Republican candidate (and for that matter, the Democratic candidate as well.)  Pro-life Republicans should move en-mass to support pro-life candidates and try to secure the nomination.  But let’s say that despite the efforts of all the conservative Christians, Rudy becomes the candidate.  Then what?  And suppose that Hillary becomes the Democratic candidate.  Now what?  Choices:

  1. Vote Rudy
  2. Vote Hillary
  3. Don’t vote
  4. Vote third party pro-life candidate.

hillaryandrudy_img_assist_custom.jpgAny vote except the first will move the Democrats toward the White House with a liberal agenda like none yet seen in this land.  Expect disastrous foreign policy and less national security (which I feel is perhaps the issue most people will concern themselves with this election cycle,) greater push toward the gay agenda, movement toward socialized medicine, expanded entitlements, higher taxes and all the rest of it.  What is the likely impact of a Democrat in the White House on abortion?  Disastrous!.  And here’s why:

THE BATTLE OVER ABORTION IS IN THE COURTS.

The supreme and federal courts are the battle ground not only for abortion but just about every other liberal (oh, sorry, “progressive”) issue.  For the most part, the liberal (there I go again) agenda cannot be advanced in the legislature (look at California and Prop 22 in 2000 preventing the state from recognizing gay “marriage–that’s California!)  The most important issue concerning the president is, in this day and age, the court appointments.

Here’s what Ted Olsen (the former solicitor general who worked with Giuliani in the Reagan Department of Justice and is a trusted, effective conservative) has said:

That is one very important reason why this conservative Republican [Olsen] is supporting Rudy Giuliani for president. I know the qualities he will look for in the persons he will appoint to the Supreme Court and the lower federal courts: Individuals of talent, quality, experience, integrity, intellect and conscious of constitutional limits on judicial authority; men and women who will respect and defer to the wisdom of the framers of the Constitution and the rights of the citizens to make policy through their elected representatives. Jurists in the mold of Justices Scalia, Thomas and Alito and Chief Justices Rehnquist and Roberts.

I know this because I have known Rudy Giuliani for 25 years. We first met when we served together in the Justice Department in the early years of the Reagan administration, where Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito were young lawyers honing their conservative legal instincts, and where jurists such as Bork, Scalia, and Thomas were first being considered for judicial positions. We have been close friends and colleagues ever since.

The real battle is not the presidency, but the courts.  Rudy has promised not to frustrate the pro-life agenda by appointing activist jurists.  That’s very important.  And when it comes time to vote for Rudy or Hillary, I’ll bear the stench, hold my nose and vote for Rudy.

    1) If you really believe that Rudy will fight for us in the courts you are naive. He supports partial birth abortion. He personally finantially supported Planned parenthood. Thinks Roe V Wade is OK. He said he hates abortions, but supports public funding of them. This is not a man who can be trusted to even think straight, much less appoint good judges.

    2) How does the Pro-life cause survive with the top Republican a staunch abortion proponent? Can it survive at all? It will set back the cause even more than if Hillary is elected.

    3) The courts are not the only place this battle is fought. Would Rudy uphold the ban on embryonic Stem Cell research? What about the Cow/Human hybrids they are staring to create in England? Cloning? Assisted suicide? The courts have a large role, but not the only one. A president has a huge impact on a variety of life issues. They need to be able to think clearly. What other issues will come up in the next 4-8 years that he can not be trusted to make the right decisions on?

    4) Finally – Abortion is not Rudy’s only problem. There’s also Guns, Marriage, euthanasia etc etc. He will be disastrous to these critical issues and to the Republican party in general. These ARE THE ISSUES THAT MATTER MOST. If the Republican party thinks it can turn it’s back on all these issues then we have an obligation to tell them that it is unacceptable or we have conceded them to the left. Are you willing to live with that?

Franklin, it is not naive to think that Rudy may in fact be the Republican candidate. If so, will the country and conservatives be better served by Rudy or someone like Hillary? Again, any vote other than for Rudy in this scenario will surely drag us farther into the liberal deep.

Rudy is not my first choice (or second or third, for that matter) but he may in fact be the choice of Republicans this election cycle.
